This is the second edition of Cherokee Place Names in the Southeastern United States. Publication date 23 February 2013

This book provides authentic information about the origins and meanings of hundreds of Cherokee-derived place names in the Southeastern United States. It manages to avoid the usual tedious "scholarly" and academic writing styles.

Here you will find historic and linguistic information and selected Cherokee myths that relate to specific place names, with pronunciations for many of the place names and Cherokee words. It is a valuable resource for information on the Cherokee Syllabary and language, and it contains an improved arrangement of that syllabary. There is even a full listing of the Cherokee street names for Connestee Falls, NC, with meanings and suggested pronunciations.

The author believes that works about The Trail of Tears have been overdone, but he includes a good review of that topic, based on official military and government records and long interviews done in the late 19th Century with those who were involved in the Removal, both white and Indian. One can feel the stark inhumanity of the Removal of the Cherokee from Georgia and the eastern U.S. in 1838-1839.

There are links to treaties and maps, to Cherokee songs, and to audio and video information in or about the Cherokee language.

The book is well illustrated. It has a table of contents with links to the chapters, and a full index. The list of illustrations includes links to each one, except for the decorative Cherokee language illustrations at the end of each chapter. All of the illustrations are in color for those who may be reading on other electronic devices that are color-enabled.

The author is a retired university professor who was born and grew up in the mountains of western North Carolina.

Fascinating word origins. I live in Kentucky, and have been through some of these places mentioned in the book. I've been studying the Cherokee language for a few years, now, and it's great to see how names were chosen, insights into their culture, and their way of thinking. It's written in an easy flowing way, as if the author is talking with you. I read half the book in one night! I'll be keeping this one around to refer to often.
